In 2003, archaeologists made a groundbreaking discovery in the Liang Bua cave of Flores: the skeletal remains of a previously unknown species of human, Homo floresiensis. These tiny hominins, nicknamed “hobbits” due to their small stature, lived around 50,000 years ago and bore an uncanny resemblance to the descriptions of the Ebu Gogo.

Could the legend be rooted in reality? Some researchers speculate that early encounters between Homo floresiensis and modern humans may have inspired the tales.
